Papervision3D Preview!

Papervision3D is for real. From what I’ve ever seen with Flash3D this is the first time I’ve seen something that’s really usable 3D in Flash! Carlos Ulloa, the author, has done a excellent job in creating a very clean, easy to use api. I was up and running in less than 10 minutes with my first project!

Now, if you come from a background in 3D with programs like 3D Studio Max, Maya or Softimage, you’re gonna love this. It works the way you’d expect it to work with controlling 3D space – x, y, z, rotationx, rotationy, rotationz, scalex, scaley, scalez. PV3D also gives you the ability to manage a camera with zoom and focus to create different lens effects.

So, you might say “So how’s it ‘usable’? Why would 3DS, Maya guys care at all?” – GREAT question, ‘gladyaasked’. Currently PV3D supports the import of ASE (ascii scene export) and as I’m writing this, Carlos is writing the COLLADA importer right now 🙂 The COLLADA format is widely adopted and is currently used in ps3, psp, Unreal and c4 engines, as well as google earth. Best of all, it’s XML !!! Getting excited yet?!? You can create your models and texture them using any one of these applications and those mapping coordinates, along with the model, will be applied at runtime with PV3D in Flash! Now THAT’S usable 😉

You can get Max and Maya COLLADA pluggins at feelingsoftware.com as well as a COLLADA viewer. They’re free, and I’ve installed the Max plugin without a problem.

You might might be saying to yourself right now: “But I don’t have $3400 to spend on 3DS or some fancy software!!!”. Yeah, neither do I. Luckily, there’s an Open Source 3D application called Blender and guess what? It exports to COLLADA format (1.04) 😉

The samples below are all ASE models created in 3D Studio Max and loaded at runtime. Each model ranges between 20 – 100k and can be textured with png, gif, jpg, swf at runtime.

Carlos comes from a background in game development from PS1 days. Alot of those concepts are coming back to play in Papervision3D. What with low poly models and runtime texture maps, I think we’re going to see some interesting games and concepts come out of this.

Right now, it’s AS2/Flash8 compatible, and there are definite plans to port it to AS3. Carlos mentioned doing some tests with AS3 already and had said the speeds were many times faster which is great news.

ALSO NOTE THAT IT’S NOT RELEASED YET AS OF 12.1.2006 – CARLOS WILL BE RELEASING THE BETA THIS WEEK.

tie model with matrix material Tie Model is a simple model created in 3D Studio Max and exported as an ASE file. I’ve mapped an FLV of the Matrix streams as the texture for the model.
Earth model This is a basic sphere created in 3D Studio Max with an earth.jpg map applied as the texture at runtime.
Torus Created in 3D Studio Max and exported as an ASE file. Matrix streams applied as the texture.
Simple Plane Object Plane object created at runtime with Papervision3D Plane class. Textured with a basic movieclip that loads an external FLV. Camera zoom set to 7 and focus set to 50
tv model Created in 3D Studio Max and exported as an ASE file. Basic Material3D applied as the texture with a line color.

Papervision3D – oh my…

I’d known about Papervision3D since I created the OSFlash project myself, but hadn’t really experienced it until today. Dood, life is cruel sometimes. Now I gotta wait until December to play around with it!!! See, I knew, I knew if I looked that’d I’d wanna play and I’d be screwed. That’s why I put a “you no looky” sign on this one but Carlos felt a need to share since my previous post about Roxik.com 😉

Now, this isn’t really new on the web, but it’s new to me, and Carlos shared it because of my questions about using animated SWF’s and having those animations displayed. He popped this little demo over and I had share:

Oh, and by the way, this is in Flash 8 XD – an AS3 port is definitely on the todo’s but wow, amazing speed with Flash 8. I can only imagine the increases with AS3!

Inventor’s Workshop

Man, this is alot of fun, I gotta tell ya. I just spent a good hour trying to create physical inventions to deal with certain goals – like routing a ball to a container. Keith just launched this little gem for PBS Kids this week and I can hardly believe he’s delivered this thing already. When I first saw it about 2 weeks ago, it was a couple of circles and lines!

You get a set of “parts” to create your invention to do the goal they give you. After you get the feel for what the parts “do”, you can really come up with some colorful ways of manipulating the situation and accomplishing your goal.

I really think that Keith should consider doing this for a living now. How much could he possibly make as a male stripper?

Christmas with the Kranks video jigsaw puzzle

Well, I know it’s early, but I’m going to spread some Christmas cheer! Actually, this is a video jigsaw puzzle I did for sony about 2 years go and it’s always seems to put a smile on my face 🙂

Enjoy!

Coolest earth mapping I’ve seen yet

and well, umm, it’s friggin’ cool what Keith did with mapping the globe then dealing with rotation and keeping the positions in sync. If you ask him about it, sounds like a 3rd grader should be able to do it – but it’s seriously wicked (dood). Now THIS is how you do it 😉

Oh and this just in: That’s just the cherry on top. You do this interactive thing where you drag/drop various landmarks/continents to their correct positions on the globe and it’s this killer geography lesson all in one. It’s fairly addicting (thanks for wasting another solid hour of my life…again). My kids are gonna love this

Xwing 3D Model Demo

This is the video that I showed at FITC Hollywood. It’s a demo on how to create realistic 3D models for game play.

Original Star Wars IV Animation: FOUND!

Well, I was digging around trying to fix my games that are hosted over at TheForce.net and I found this SWF I made for the Wire frame version of the trench run!

LOL, I don’t think anyone actually ever saw this animation. The wireframe game was a bit tuff and the game itself was pretty obscure. I based on the animation from the original SW4 where they are describing the aproach to blowing up the Death Star.
